I was trying to enable and test the plugin for wordpress that allows me to perform an automatic upgrade when I received the error ‘could not initiate maintenance mode’.

The solution and description to this error is set out below; 

For me, it was a case of not checking the FTP and Directory Settings correctly.

The plugin actually explains this but I had missed it! See below..

What is your FTP Base Directory. If you have installed wordpress inside public_html folder then your base ftp directory is /public_html
If your you have installed your wordpress in public_html/wpau folder then your base ftp directory is /public_html/wpau
If you install the wordpress into the root directory then your base directory will be /

 Sample FTP Credentials

FTP Username -   ifoundafix

FTP Password  – Pa55w0rd

FTP Base Directory (The root dir where wordpress is installed)  – /public_html

FTP Host  – ftp.ifoundafix.com

I had downloaded a free wordpress theme for my blog and I was unable to modify the footer.php file because it had been encrypted. This is most likely because the author of the theme wanted to keep their link at the bottom of the blog in order to maintain credit for their work.

The solution and description to this error is set out below; Most website owners would require the freedom to change how the footer looks. With an encrypted footer, you can’t change things like adding a “Contact Us” link , Copyright link or an RSS button, etc. You might also want to check whether there is any malicious code in the encryption. For example there could be some spurious ‘phone home’ code.

To remove this encryption, please follow these steps..

Step 1

 Locate and open index.php 

• Find the include code for the footer. The footer include code is usually like this: <?php get_footer(); ?>

Step 2

Add this comment code on the top and bottom of the footer code:

<!-Wordpress footer code starts here–>
<?php get_footer(); ?>
<!-Wordpress footer code ends here–>

Save the file and upload it to the server.

Step 3

Load the theme in a browser. View the source code by clicking

View -> Source (If you view in IE) or Ctrl + U (If you view in Firefox)

Step 4

The source code in between <!- WordPress footer code starts here–> and <!-Wordpress footer code ends here–> is the source code for the footer.

Now, all you need to do is open footer.php and replace the encrypted code from earlier with the actual source code.

After this, you can then start to modify the footer to suit your own requirements.
Note: This article is not advocating that you  remove the credits to the author.

I was unable to setup my wordpress plugin for WP_Cache. I received the error “advanced-cache.php link does not exist” and also “Error: WP_CACHE is not enabled in your wp-config.php “

The solution and description to this error is set out below;

1. First, you need to make the contents of the “wp-content” folder writable.
2. Next, you need to add the line- define(‘WP_CACHE’, true); to your wp-config.php folder

i.e see below..

// ** MySQL settings ** //
define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘xxxxxxxxxxxx’);    // The name of the database
define(‘DB_USER’, ‘xxxxxxxxxxx’);     // Your MySQL username
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘xxxxxxxxxx’); // …and password
define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);    // 99% chance you won’t need to change this value
define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8′);
define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);
define(‘WP_CACHE’, true);

3. Refresh the plugin.

Every time I open Dreamweaver I receive the message “an ftp error occurred – cannot make connection to host. Your login or password is incorrect. Please check your connection information.”. When I enter the information in manage sites it works perfectly. Unfortunately this happens every time I close and re-open dreamweaver.

The solution and description to this error is set out below;

The Adobe 8.0.2 update fixes a problem of FTP usernames and passwords in Dreamweaver site definitions being deleted when you close and re-open Dreamweaver 8 or when you reboot your machine. This problem is the result of a change introduced in Internet Explorer 7.
